16 Mar National Beach Clean Day (Contribution from SJOG Dominick Street Programme)
On a beautiful sunny day in September, the 19th to be precise, Saint John of God Dominic Street Day Programme service users took part in the National Beach Clean Day initiative on Banna Beach. This stunning stretch of beach is located just outside Tralee town and is a joy to visit at any time of year but on a particularly superb day like today it is just exquisite.
This hard working group of litter busters is regularly seen enthusiastically picking up litter around Tralee town and the group is very willing to do its share in contributing to a cleaner, healthier world for all of us. Members of the group get support from Tralee Chamber of Commerce who supply the litter collection bags, the litter pickers and the high vis jackets. The group is also involved in a green flag project where members learn about the dangers of plastics in the sea. “ We don’t what any animals mistaking this plastic for food” says participant Eddie Balfry and “These plastics can get into our food also when we eat the fish” .
The group is very proud of the fact that Tralee went from 30th place in the rankings in January right up to 5th place in the overall rankings in the recent IBAL campaign (Irish Business Against Litter) . The biggest jump of any town in Ireland.
Well done everybody.
